The number of women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine has increased significantly over the past three years, surpassing the figures recorded before the start of the full-scale invasion. As of October 2024, almost 69,000 women serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, of which more than 48,000 are military personnel. This is more than 20% more than in January 2022, when the total number of women in the Armed Forces was slightly more than 52 thousand.
According to Diana Kopanytsia, the increase in the number of women in the Armed Forces reflects not only their active participation in the defense of Ukraine, but also the transformation of public perceptions about the role of women in the military sphere. Currently, more than 5,500 female military personnel are directly on the front line, performing tasks in combat conditions.
Such a significant increase in the number of women in the Armed Forces shows their readiness to take responsibility in critical moments and actively participate in the defense of the country. It also reflects changes in the Department of Defense’s approach to gender equality in the military and promotes the inclusion of women in a wide variety of military specialties and leadership positions.
