The demarcation line in Ukraine will not change significantly in the near future: Blinken

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the dividing line between Ukraine and Russia is likely to remain almost unchanged for the foreseeable future. He said this in an interview The New York Times.

Answering the question about the possible end of the war, Blinken emphasized that this decision should be made by the Ukrainians themselves. According to him, “the Ukrainian people must decide what their future will be and which way they want to reach it.” He also added that Ukraine’s territorial claims will remain unchanged, however, from a practical point of view, the demarcation line will not change significantly in the near future.

When asked by the journalist whether it was about the possibility of ceding territories, Blinken replied: “Concessions are not an issue. The question is whether Ukrainians, with the support of international partners, will find ways to return their territories.”

The State Secretary also expressed the opinion that the ceasefire, if it happens, could be used by Russia to regroup forces and prepare for a new aggression. He emphasized the importance of creating conditions for lasting peace that would ensure that Russia could no longer attack Ukraine.

Among the possible mechanisms, Blinken mentioned Ukraine’s membership in NATO or providing it with security guarantees from international partners. He explained that such measures should be a signal to Russia about serious consequences in case of further aggression.

“We must be sure that Ukraine will receive sufficient potential to deter future attacks, and this can manifest itself in many forms. From NATO to security guarantees from individual states.” he said.

Blinken also expressed hope that the United States will remain an important partner for Ukraine in its struggle:

“This has never been about Ukraine alone. This is a matter of global security and order that we must maintain together.”

Blinken’s statement underscores the complexity of the situation, which requires balanced decisions, both at the political and military levels, to ensure peace and stability for Ukraine in the future.
