Children of war

The district police officer of the Bucha district, who raped a 10-year-old girl, was sentenced

In Ukraine today, children suffer not only from war – daily shelling, loss of parents, mutilated homes and forced escape from their hometowns. The war brought not only an external enemy into our home. She also exposed the inner darkness – the one that eats away at society from the inside, covering itself with epaulettes and official certificates. The worst thing is when crimes are committed by those who should stand guard over the law and protect the weakest. And while some fight crime, fight and die under shelling, evacuate people under enemy fire, risking their lives, others break the law, rape and ruin children’s lives.

The case that shook the capital is another testimony of this terrible truth. In Kyiv, a district police officer turned a 10-year-old girl into his victim. And this is not fiction, not dirty gossip – sentence Sviatoshynskyi district court of the city of Kyiv from March 17, 2025 became a point in this case. Eleven years in prison is the sentence for a former policeman who raped a child and threatened her with death and violence against her family.

He came to Kyiv from Luhansk region in July 2022 — already after the full-scale invasion. He found a job in the Buchansk district police department, received the rank of lieutenant and the position of precinct police officer. In appearance – an ordinary law enforcement officer, one of those who should protect people in the rear. But ordinary scum was hiding behind the service card.

His stepdaughter introduced him to a little girl born in 2013 — her new friend. It all started with this. In May 2023, a police officer contacted the child on Telegram. At first he asked to send intimate photos. Then the threats began – he told the child that he would “put her parents in jail” if she refused him. And then – rape. Repeatedly.

The girl remembered ten such episodes. He raped her at home, in the car, in the forest. He abused, mentally and physically broke the child. He said that her father “will not return from the war” and her mother “will remain in Poland forever.” The little boy couldn’t stand it and told his friend. Yes, the victim’s grandmother. So the truth began to emerge.

The girl’s mother, who was working abroad, immediately returned to Ukraine as soon as she learned about the tragedy. She stated in court that she suspects this bastard of abusing her own stepdaughter. According to her, the man not only wrote to the girl, but also called and threatened her. He promised to “send the grandmother to prison”, handed over money – tried to buy the child’s silence. According to the case file, he gave 500 hryvnias, seemingly just like that.

At the trial, the child remembered everything down to the smallest detail. How he forced her to undress, how he threatened and raped her, how he destroyed her life. The sentence is 11 years in prison. The court also stripped him of the rank of police lieutenant, prohibited him from working in law enforcement agencies and anywhere where there is access to children for three years after his release.

At the trial, the accused completely denied his guilt. He insisted that he has been working in law enforcement since 2006, and he called the girl allegedly only to find out where his stepdaughter was. In his explanations, the policeman convinced the court that the child herself allegedly offered him intimate contact in exchange for money, but he, according to him, refused. In the end, the law enforcement officer was detained by the employees of the State Bureau of Investigation. In his defense, he stated that the girl behaved “immorally” and her family, according to him, was “disadvantaged.”

The defendant’s wife and his stepdaughter supported these accusations against the victim. They appeared on the side of the policeman and assured the court that the girl allegedly behaved indecently, and the man himself was simply slandered.

This story is a terrible reminder that children in Ukraine suffer not only from war, orphanhood and losses. They suffer from those who should protect them. From adults who should be a support, but become executioners. The biggest horror is that they tried to make the child guilty of his own rape. That adults — not strangers, but those who lived nearby — sided with the criminal and accused the ten-year-old girl of “immorality.”
