The EU is strengthening sanctions against Belarus to combat circumvention of restrictions

EU representatives reached an agreement in principle on a new package of sanctions against Belarus. Chairmanship of Belgium in the European Union reported on the X social network that this package is aimed at strengthening measures in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in particular, the fight against sanctions evasion.
“This package will strengthen our response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including the fight against sanctions evasion“, the message says.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported on the EU’s intention to introduce new restrictions against Belarus in order to make it impossible for Russia to use loopholes to circumvent sanctions. In particular, it is planned to ban the import through Minsk of luxury cars and other Western goods, the supply of which is already prohibited to Russia
It is noted that this new package of sanctions is a continuation of the EU’s efforts to pressure Russia and its allies in connection with the war in Ukraine. Earlier, the Council of the EU already agreed on the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which included a ban on transshipment services for Russian liquefied gas and strengthening the fight against sanctions evasion.
