The EU plans to create a network of night trains with private compartments that will connect 100 cities
German startup Nox plans to launch a new network of night trains that will cover 100 cities in Europe. Only private compartments for one or two passengers are provided in the carriages, informs Euronews Travel.
The first flights are planned to open in 2027. The price of the tickets will not exceed the price of the air flight. There are three types of rooms in the trains: a single loft with an upper bed, a seat and a table; a double loft with a double upper bed, two seats and a table; double room with two beds, one of which transforms into a seat. In each version, the beds will be two meters long, and the compartment will have enough space for standing and storing luggage. Some compartments are equipped with panoramic windows.
“Sleeping while the train takes you through Europe is a great idea. But nowadays people have to share their compartments with strangers, the beds are cramped and it’s often more expensive than flying. We want to change that and make night trains an integral part of European travel.” – noted Thibaut Constant, co-founder of the Nox startup.
Constant himself made more than 400 overnight train journeys around the world. It was this experience that significantly influenced the choice of design of sleeping cars. The co-founder of the company, Janek Smalla, noted that the layout of the compartment allows for more passengers to be accommodated than in regular trains.
The list of cities between which the trains will run currently includes Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Budapest and Rome. The company plans to fully implement this large-scale project by 2035.
Schedules and prices are already available on the official website of the Nox startup. The cost of single rooms starts from 79 euros, and double rooms – from 149 euros. Each train has spaces for bicycles and wheelchairs, as well as organized food and drinks for passengers. The startup also offers free membership to the Early Bird Club, where up-to-date news, early access to bookings and travel discounts are available.
