The EU plans to develop its own AI to reduce dependence on the US and China

The European Commission has prepared a new strategy called “Applying AI”, which outlines plans to create its own artificial intelligence technologies within the EU to reduce dependence on US and Chinese developments. This is reported by Financial Times.

New strategy of the European Commission “Apply AI” aimed at the development of European artificial intelligence tools in order to strengthen the security, stability and increase the industrial competitiveness of the EU. The document highlights the importance of improving the use of AI in healthcare, defense and the manufacturing sector.

The Commission plans to “strengthen EU sovereignty in the field of AI”, accelerating the development and implementation of its own technologies. This is supposed to be done through policies that will “accelerate the implementation of scalable and reproducible European generative AI solutions in state administration bodies,” the project says.

The document also warns about “external dependencies in the AI stack” — infrastructure and software used to create, train and manage artificial intelligence systems. Such technologies, it is noted, “can be used as weapons” by both state and non-state actors, posing a potential threat to the security of supply chains. The European Commission has scheduled the presentation of the strategy for October 7.
