The European Union responded to Shoigu’s threats to Finland and the Baltic countries
The European Commission stated that the statements of Russian officials, in particular the Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu, about the alleged involvement of the Baltic countries and Finland in organizing flights of Ukrainian drones for attacks on Russian territory are part of Russian disinformation. This was stated by the European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper.
“Such statements are part of the Russian disinformation textbook, and also create pretexts for escalation and undermine regional security. Nothing new. And in fact, I would also like to draw your attention to the statements that we have also seen, where these very member states clearly reject this baseless claim. So, from what we have seen, there is no evidence to support these claims,” she stressed.
Earlier, Sergei Shoigu stated that the cases of Ukrainian drones flying over the territory of Finland and the Baltic states for strikes on Russia have apparently become more frequent. According to him, this may indicate either the “extremely ineffective” operation of Western air defense systems, or that these states are deliberately opening their airspace and, thus, are “open accomplices in aggression against Russia”.
On April 10, the Baltic states rejected Russia’s accusations that their territory and airspace were allegedly used for drone attacks on Russian targets, emphasizing that such statements are part of a disinformation campaign.
