Ukrainian military deployed in western Libya: RFI reveals details

Ukraine has established contacts with the Libyan government in Tripoli and, according to available information, has formed a stronghold there, which may now pose a threat to Russian ships heading through the Mediterranean Sea towards the Suez Canal. This is stated in an investigation by the French publication RFI, which refers to sources in Libya.

According to the interlocutors, the stay of the Ukrainian military was agreed with the government headed by Abdel Hamid Dbeyba.

“More than 200 Ukrainian officers and experts are stationed in Libya with the consent of the Dbeyba government. They work at three main facilities, including the air base in Misrata,” — noted one of the informants.

According to the media, the Ukrainian contingent was deployed at three facilities. The first facility is the air base in Misrata, where AFRICOM forces, Turkish and Italian units, as well as British intelligence are also located.

The second facility is located in the Melita area, 50 km from the capital. Infrastructure for launching air and sea drones was deployed there. The source of the publication specified that all this work was carried out in the fall of 2025.

The third facility is intended for coordination between Ukrainian specialists and units of the Western Libyan army based on the 111th brigade in the area of Tripoli airport. It is there that Ukrainian specialists work together with units of the Western Libyan army.

Earlier it was reported that in March, the head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that Ukraine was for the first time preparing a strategy for expanding relations and the presence of our state on the African continent.
