The G7 countries decided to link the sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation with the course of peace talks
The countries that are part of the “Group of Seven” (G7) have decided to link the further strengthening of sanctions against Russia with the progress of peace negotiations to end the war against Ukraine.
Such a decision was made by the G7 foreign ministers during a meeting held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. Part of the negotiations took place with the participation of Ukrainian Minister Andrii Sybiga. The result of the discussions was the agreement of a single position on the sanctions policy.
In a joint statement that ended up in orders “European Pravda”, the ministers emphasized that new restrictions against the Russian Federation after February 2025 will depend on whether Moscow makes real and good faith efforts to end the war. The key condition is the guarantee of security and stability of Ukraine as an independent and sovereign state.
The G7 countries also confirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine and its territorial integrity. The document emphasizes the importance of sanctions pressure, as well as the use of revenues from frozen Russian assets to finance aid to Ukraine.
The decision was taken by consensus, which means that all G7 members, including the United States, support this position. The participants of the meeting also expressed satisfaction with the level of dialogue with the Ukrainian representative and noted the contribution of the “Group of Seven” states in supporting Ukraine.
It will be recalled that earlier in Munich, the USA called on European allies to prepare proposals for security guarantees for Ukraine. At the same time, Donald Trump recently expressed support for the idea of returning Russia to the G7, which caused mixed reactions among Western partners.
