The General Staff approved the concept of using artificial intelligence in the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine adopted the Concept of the Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies and formed special units that will be involved in testing them in real combat conditions. This decision became part of the large-scale digital and technological transformation of the Ukrainian army, which continued in 2025. This was reported by the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Brigadier General Andriy Lebedenko.
One of the key areas of application of artificial intelligence is machine vision systems. Such technologies are capable of automatically processing and analyzing images obtained from drones, which allows for faster and more accurate detection of objects and potential threats on the battlefield.
In 2026, the Armed Forces plan to pay special attention to improving the management of innovation processes, expanding scientific research, larger-scale use of artificial intelligence, and integrating unmanned systems into all branches of the military.
According to the results of 2025, the military considered more than a thousand innovative developments, of which more than 130 received grant support. The largest share among these projects concerned unmanned aerial vehicles — 28%. Robotic systems accounted for 15%, communication and information protection technologies — 11%, and electronic warfare and countermeasure systems — 8%.
An important direction was also the widespread introduction of ground robotic complexes. Units of the Ukrainian army received more than 15 thousand unmanned ground platforms, more than 80 specialized companies and 40 battalions were formed, and more than 1,500 specialists were trained in ten specialized training centers.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasize that innovative technologies should primarily help the military on the front line and reduce the burden on the infantry. One of such solutions could be mechanical exoskeletons, which will allow fighters to more easily carry equipment and ammunition. Currently, servicemen can walk up to 10–15 kilometers per day, carrying tens of kilograms of weight.
During 2025, the army implemented more than 30 IT projects. Among them are the creation of a unified air situation display system and the establishment of interaction between electronic warfare and electronic reconnaissance units. In addition to the open digital services “Army+” and “Impulse”, the army is also implementing closed digital platforms for combat management, and artificial intelligence technologies are being tested in specially formed units.
