The head of the CEC made a statement on the post-war elections

After the end of the war in Ukraine, the terms of holding elections should not be too long, so that it does not look like an attempt by the current government to stay in office without proper grounds. About this stated head of the Central Election Commission Oleg Didenko in an interview with the Spanish newspaper Pais.

He emphasized the need for careful preparation for the election process:

“We must prepare as best we can for the post-war elections, but these deadlines must not be excessively prolonged, so that it does not look like an attempt to stay in power without sufficient grounds.”

According to the head of the CEC, after the end of hostilities, Ukraine will need more than three months to organize presidential elections.

He also noted that the future holding of presidential and parliamentary elections will depend on many factors that will develop after the war. In this context, the Verkhovna Rada will have to make changes to the electoral legislation adapted to the new realities.

“One of the biggest problems is the millions of displaced people. According to the UN, more than 10 million Ukrainians have left their homes, more than six million of them have crossed the border with other countries. And although the CEC has updated the voter lists, it is of little use if the potential voters have not changed their place of residence. Before the war, we had 50,000 registered voters in Bakhmut, but now we are sure there are zero. The problem is that people are nowhere not registered”, – emphasized Didenko.
