The Kremlin proposed connecting Russia and the USA with a tunnel
Russia and the United States should be connected by a tunnel through the Bering Strait, which should “symbolize the unity” of Moscow and Washington. This statement was made by Kirill Dmitriev, the special envoy of the head of the Russian regime for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RFPI).
He recalled that a similar project was being developed back in the days of the USSR, and even the documents of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy reflected the idea of creating such a corridor, which they then wanted to call the “Kennedy-Khrushchev” bridge of peace.
Dmitriev proposed a modern “original” name for the hypothetical tunnel – “Putin-Trump”. According to him, the transport corridor would open up new opportunities for joint resource development, and the construction of the 112-kilometer structure would create thousands of jobs and stimulate the economies of both countries.
The head of the RFPI said that the cost of the project could be significantly lower than the previously estimated $65 billion. Using technologies from The Boring Company, owned by American entrepreneur Elon Musk, he said, would reduce costs to less than $8 billion and complete the work in about eight years.
Dmitriev voiced his proposal immediately after a telephone conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which took place on October 16. During this contact, as Trump confirmed, a significant part of the discussion was devoted to the topic of developing trade between the United States and Russia after the end of the war in Ukraine.
