The largest biomethane plant has started operating in Ukraine
A new biomethane plant belonging to the Teofipol Energy Company has been put into operation in Ukraine. The enterprise has become the largest in the industry – its design capacity reaches about 56 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. This was reported by Heorhiy Geletukha, Chairman of the Board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine.
With the launch of this facility, the number of biomethane producers in the country has increased to six, and their total capacity has reached 106 million cubic meters annually. Currently, four enterprises supply biomethane directly to the gas infrastructure: three to gas distribution networks, and another one to the gas transportation system. Two more produce bio-LNG – liquefied biomethane, which is transported in special cryogenic tanks.
A feature of the new plant is a direct connection to the gas transportation system, which allows it to immediately feed biomethane into the main gas flows without intermediaries. This distinguishes it from most other enterprises in the industry.
It is expected that another, seventh biomethane plant will appear in Ukraine this year. At the same time, total production volumes remain insignificant compared to market needs: about 0.1 billion cubic meters per year against approximately 20 billion cubic meters of annual natural gas consumption.
Ukraine has also started exporting biomethane to the European Union: in 2025, supply volumes exceeded 11.2 million cubic meters. Key producers include MHP Group, Vitagro Group, Gals Agro and YM Liquid Gas, which are developing both biomethane production and its liquefied forms.
According to forecasts, five more new biomethane plants with a total capacity of about 20 million cubic meters per year may be launched in Ukraine in 2026.
