The leader of the German opposition arrived in Kyiv

German opposition leader and chancellor candidate from the conservative CDU/CSU bloc Friedrich Merz visited Ukraine on December 9. About this informs Der Spiegel. The date of arrival was kept secret for security reasons.

Immediately after arriving at the Kyiv railway station, Merts stated that the main purpose of his trip was to obtain up-to-date information on the situation with the defense of Ukraine. He expressed his expectations for the meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyi: during it, it is planned to discuss how Germany can help Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression.

“And I just want to know today what the situation is in Ukraine and what we can do to help this affected country continue its defense against Russian aggression.”, – noted the leader of the Christian Democrats.

He also expressed his desire for a speedy end to the war and restoration of peace in Europe. Merz, who has a high chance of becoming the next chancellor of Germany after the collapse of the “traffic light coalition” in November, shows a firm intention to strengthen relations with Ukraine in the event of his election. Friedrich Merz already visited Ukraine in May 2022, shortly after the start of a full-scale war.
