The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to three scientists from the USA

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to American scientists John Clark, Michel Devore and John Martinis for the discovery of macroscopic quantum tunneling and quantized energy levels in an electric circuit. This was announced in Stockholm during the presentation of this year’s laureates.

“The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics to John Clarke, Michel H. Devore and John M. Martinis “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in an electric circuit””, – it is said in the message of the committee.

The laureates’ experiments on a chip made it possible for the first time to observe the action of quantum physics in a system large enough to hold in the hands. They proved that even in large-scale electric circuits, quantum phenomena are possible — tunneling and quantization of energy. These results open prospects for the development of a new generation of quantum technologies — from quantum computers and sensors to quantum cryptography. The amount of the award is SEK 11 million.

Let us remind you that last year the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to John Hopfield and Jeffrey Hinton for the discoveries and inventions that laid the foundation for the development of machine learning neural networks, which, among other things, contributed to the creation of modern artificial intelligence systems.
