The number of attempts to illegally cross the border has almost halved: the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine

In January 2025, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Ukrainian border decreased by 45% compared to July 2024. About this reported spokesman of the State Border Service Andriy Demchenko.

“Starting from July of last year, the trend is towards a decrease in attempts to cross the border illegally. If we compare January with July last year, the decrease is as much as 45%. However, attempts to cross the border illegally continue every day.” Demchenko noted.

According to him, most of the cases of illegal crossing of the border are recorded outside the checkpoints in the areas bordering Romania and Moldova. Less often, such violations occur on the borders with Hungary and Slovakia, and the least – in the direction of Poland.

Cases of illegal crossing are also recorded directly at checkpoints. The largest number of such attempts was recorded at the Polish border, which is associated with a high passenger traffic. People trying to leave Ukraine illegally often turn to people who organize illegal transit schemes. This often exposes them to danger, as the routes pass through rivers and mountainous terrain.

According to the DPSU, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 760 organized groups were exposed, which were engaged in illegal transportation of people across the border. About 40 such groups were discovered only in January 2025.
