The number of cases of domestic violence is growing in Ukraine: Opendatabot

In Ukraine, for the period from January to November 2024, an increase in the number of criminal proceedings based on facts of domestic violence was recorded. About this reported the Opendatabot service, referring to data from the Office of the Attorney General.

“2,777 criminal proceedings on domestic violence were recorded in 11 months of 2024. The number of cases is increasing year by year since the beginning of the great war. Approximately 80% of cases reach court”, the message says.

According to the service, in 2022 the number of cases of domestic violence decreased significantly, which was probably caused by the start of the war. During that year, only 1,500 criminal proceedings under Art. 126-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (domestic violence). However, after that, the indicators began to grow rapidly. 2024 saw 5% more cases than the previous year and 17% more than 2021.

The peak of appeals fell on January 2024, when 435 criminal cases were opened. A total of 76% of victims of domestic violence this year are women. At the same time, since the beginning of the war, cases of men asking for help have become more frequent.

Before the war, 80% of appeals came from women, and 20% from men. Nowadays, among the men who have suffered, the most frequent applicants are elderly people facing violence from their adult children or grandchildren, mainly due to financial conflicts. In the first nine months of 2024, the hotline received 9,800 calls from people aged 60 and older.
