The number of Ukrainians who want to adopt a child has increased by almost 60%

During the past year, 927 children were adopted. At the end of 2023, there were more than 15,600 children who could be adopted in Ukraine. Most of them are teenagers aged 11 to 18. Such children have the least chance of adoption, said Dmytro Lubinets, the parliamentary commissioner for human rights, during a report in the Verkhovna Rada on the results of work for the year.
“According to the decisions of the courts, during 2023, 927 children who were registered for adoption were adopted in Ukraine, of which 716 children were under the age of 5, 156 children were from 6 to 10 years old, and 55 children were from 11 to 17 years old. In particular, 32 were adopted 12 orphans from the Volyn region and 12 from the Kyiv region were adopted in Poland, two children from the Dnipropetrovsk region were adopted in the Netherlands, three children from the Kyiv region and one child from the Donetsk region were adopted by Italian citizens. “, the report says Dmytro Lubinets.
At the end of 2023, 15,687 children were registered for adoption in Ukraine, of which 11,014 have siblings. The largest share among these children (approximately 11,000) are those who have reasons for adoption, but because of the age from 11 to 18 years, they rarely find families. Despite the development of family forms of education and the increase in the number of people willing to adopt, 4,388 children are still in various institutions. At the same time, 11,045 children who are in foster families, family-type orphanages and under care are also waiting for adoption.
During the martial law in Ukraine, the number of families who want to adopt children increased. If in 2021 there were 1,079 potential adopters on the register, then in 2023 their number increased by 57%, reaching 1,889 married couples and single individuals. The largest number of candidates is observed in Kyiv and the Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, and Odesa regions, where many people left because of the war.
