The petition to Volodymyr Zelenskyi regarding the termination of Ukrainian citizenship of Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov received the required number of votes
The petition to the President of Ukraine regarding the termination of the Ukrainian citizenship of Odesa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov gathered the 25,000 signatures required for consideration by the head of state.
The author of the appeal, Myroslav Otkovich, justified it by the fact that journalists had repeatedly published materials about Trukhanov’s alleged possession of a Russian passport. He also noted that Trukhanov voices narratives favorable to the aggressor state and protects monuments that contain symbols of Russian imperial policy.
Separately, he recalled the tragedy in Odesa on September 30, when people died due to a heavy downpour and untimely informing the population about bad weather. In Otkovich’s opinion, this event further strengthened distrust of the mayor.
“We ask you to ensure the verification of the stated fact regarding the dual citizenship of Gennady Trukhanov and, in case of confirmation, to apply the mechanisms provided for by law. We are convinced that a person who has the citizenship of an aggressor state cannot hold an elected position in Ukraine, the text of the petition reads.
Let us remind you that recently reports began to spread again in social networks that Trukhanov has the citizenship of the Russian Federation.
Trukhanov himself denies this information :
“I learned that another provocation is being prepared. Information is spreading that I allegedly have the citizenship of the Russian Federation. This question is not new – it has been asked since 2014. Since 2014, I have constantly explained that I do not have and never had Russian citizenship. I was checked by all relevant bodies of Ukraine – all of them.
According to him, in 2014, 2016 and 2018, the Russian consulate provided answers to requests stating that Trukhanov is not a citizen of Russia.
“The fake passports that are sometimes published are invalid, fake. This is another provocation. I don’t know who benefits from this, I can only speculate. I am conducting my own investigation and appeal to all authorized bodies: do a legal and thorough investigation. I ask the president and the competent services to carefully look at the documents and establish the truth, Trukhanov said.
