The Portuguese government allows the possibility of sending its military to Ukraine after the signing of a peace agreement
On December 20, Portuguese Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro, during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that the Portuguese government is ready to consider the possible deployment of its military personnel in Ukraine to comply with the future peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow, when it is concluded.
According to Montenegro, on the issue of the possible deployment of a military contingent in Ukraine, Portugal adheres to the agreed position of the European Union.
“We do not want to be here during the war, but in the coalition of the willing, Portugal is participating and will participate in operations to provide peace, — emphasized the head of the Portuguese government.
He also clarified that the deployment of forces is possible within the framework of a peacekeeping mission and in the context of security guarantees:
“And in the context of a peacekeeping mission, in the context of security guarantees, NATO, together with the Portuguese military, can deploy its forces on the territory of Ukraine. For example, together with Latvia and Lithuania, to participate in peacekeeping missions and ensure security.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Portugal traditionally supports international initiatives to ensure stability and security and is ready to join relevant missions.
“Portugal will always support and participate in security missions. Today, this is not yet foreseen, but when this issue is considered, Portugal will be able to participate in it”, – emphasized Luís Montenegro.
