The provision on the possibility of marriage from the age of 14 was removed from the draft of the new Civil Code: Stefanchuk

The working group for the preparation of the draft of the new Civil Code has decided to remove the norm that provided for the possibility of marriage from the age of 14 by court decision in the event of pregnancy or the birth of a child. This was announced on February 6 by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

According to him, during the work on the document, the reaction of society, which received the proposed changes ambiguously, was taken into account. As a result, the working group decided to abandon this norm and maintain the current regulation.

“The working group sees that society perceives this norm ambiguously. Therefore, we decided – based on the results of discussions – to remove this norm from the draft and leave the current one in force. In conclusion. This norm will not be in the draft”, – Stefanchuk emphasized.

Currently, Ukrainian legislation sets the minimum age for marriage at 18 years. At the same time, by court decision, this age can be reduced to 16 years, if this is in the interests of a minor.
