The Trump administration asked the leadership of Ukraine to withdraw the UN resolution condemning the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation

The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked the leadership of Ukraine to withdraw a UN resolution condemning the full-scale invasion of Russia that began three years ago. About this writes The Washington Post newspaper. The American proposal provides for the replacement of the text agreed by Kyiv with a document with softened wording. Representatives of Washington believe that the new version of the resolution, which should pave the way to peace, is more acceptable from their point of view, but in Ukraine it is perceived as approaching pro-Russian rhetoric.

Unnamed sources familiar with the situation reported that the Ukrainian side was informed about the new offer on February 21. As a result, this initiative shocked the authorities, because their version of the resolution, agreed with international partners, was planned to be published on February 24, the day of the third anniversary of the Russian invasion.

On the same day, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio published a statement in which he emphasized that Washington had proposed a “simple, historic resolution at the UN”, which it calls on all member states of the organization to support. “By supporting this resolution, we affirm that this conflict is terrible, that the UN can help end it, and that peace is possible. We firmly believe that the time has come to commit to ending the war,” Rubio said.

According to one of the American officials, while analyzing the text proposed by Kyiv, Washington insisted on making changes that weakened criticism of Russia and also contained wording perceived as pro-Russian. After that, the USA presented a new version of the resolution and demanded that Ukraine withdraw the already agreed version, which was planned to be signed together with its partners.

Ukrainian authorities, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, remained steadfast in their position. Representatives of the country pointed out that the new proposal is too short and contains completely new wording, which is more reminiscent of a call to appease the actions of the Russian leadership than a real step towards peace. According to sources, many representatives of other countries also expressed doubts about the proposed text, stressing that the pressure is only on Ukraine and not on Russia.
