The USA has agreed to transfer missiles for Patriot and long-range artillery to Ukraine: NYT

The United States agreed to transfer to Ukraine a batch of strategic weapons, which includes 125 long-range artillery shells and 100 missiles for anti-aircraft systems Patriot. About May 10 reported edition of The New York Times, citing a source in the US Congress.
These are missiles produced on the territory of the United States, so even if they are owned by an allied country, their transfer to a third party requires official permission from Washington. In this case, the initiative to transfer weapons came from Germany.
We will remind you that the Patriot complexes are one of the key elements of the Ukrainian air defense system. Ukraine began receiving the first such installations in 2023. The systems are capable of intercepting high-speed missiles, in particular the aeroballistic “Kinzhal”, which Russia positions as a hypersonic weapon.
Today, the United States (two complexes), Germany (three), Romania, as well as the Netherlands, which provided individual components, including radar systems, officially announced the transfer of Patriot to Ukraine.
As Matthew Saville, director of military research at the Royal Joint Institute for Defense Research, explained, Ukrainian forces have learned to use Patriot assets more effectively. They try to keep the more expensive missiles by using simpler interceptors against less threatening targets. In addition, he emphasized that Ukraine is increasing the production of its own drones to compensate for the shortage of artillery ammunition.
Earlier, on March 11, 2025, Volodymyr Zelensky publicly acknowledged the lack of air defense systems in the face of daily attacks. He also reported that he discussed the possibility of purchasing additional Patriot systems during talks with US President Donald Trump.
According to the May 4 NYT, one Patriot anti-aircraft missile group previously stationed in Israel is scheduled to be transferred to Ukraine by the summer after maintenance. At the same time, Western countries are considering the possibility of supplying another such system from Germany or Greece. Discussions are ongoing.
