The Verkhovna Rada failed to pass a law criticized by media professionals

The draft law, which provides for increased responsibility for the dissemination of information from public electronic registers, did not gain support in the Verkhovna Rada. About this reported people’s deputy Oleksiy Honcharenko. 213 deputies voted for draft law No. 10242, but 229 parliamentarians decided to send the document for a second reading.
Journalists and media persons appealed to the deputies not to support the draft law, which provides for increased criminal liability for the disclosure of data from state registers during martial law, up to eight years in prison. The fact that the document does not take into account exemption from responsibility for whistleblowers of corruption causes particular indignation.
Deputy Yaroslav Yurchyshyn also spoke in support of the journalistic community, urging his colleagues to block the adoption of the draft law.
“You can run circles around the alleged information security for a long time, but all this looks like an attempt to attack freedom of speech. If there are real security risks, it is necessary to enter into a dialogue with the media community and work out a solution together.” – he emphasized.
