The Verkhovna Rada proposes to soften the punishment for evading mobilization
On May 16, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine registered draft law No. 11260, which proposes to change Article 336 of the Criminal Code, which concerns responsibility for evasion of military service during mobilization.
Alternative punishments are offered instead of imprisonment:
- Fine from 51,000 to 85,000 hryvnias;
- Public works for a period of 160 to 240 hours;
- Corrective works for a period of one to two years;
- Restriction of freedom for a period of one to two years.
People’s deputy Anatoly Burmich, author bill, believes that imprisonment is an excessively harsh punishment for draft evasion. He notes that such a crime does not necessarily indicate a danger to society, and the use of alternative punishments will save state resources.
At present, the prospects for the adoption of the draft law seem unlikely. The initiator is only one people’s deputy, whose faction is not part of the coalition.
The draft law has not yet been considered by the Verkhovna Rada, and its final text may differ from the initial one. Currently, imprisonment for a term of 3 to 5 years remains the current norm for evasion of the draft during mobilization.
