The US Supreme Court is likely to uphold a bill that would ban TikTok in the United States. It is reported CNN.
Restrictions may come into effect as early as January 19, 2025. The ban will become a reality unless TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells the app, or unless the Supreme Court steps in and blocks the law.
US lawmakers express concerns over TikTok’s ties to China. Congress has stressed that ByteDance has close ties to the Chinese government, and that the platform’s ability to collect vast amounts of personal data on users in the US poses a national security threat.
Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden have previously expressed concern about TikTok’s possible content manipulation and data collection practices. In turn, the company rejects these allegations, saying that the fears are speculative. It also denies any influence from the Chinese government on the operation of the platform, which offers users recipes, animal videos and other popular content.
