Trump administration plans to send thousands of migrants to Guantanamo military base
Donald Trump’s administration plans to begin transferring thousands of migrants from various countries, including Ukraine, to the US military base in Guantanamo this week. About this informs WP.
The US naval base in Guantanamo Bay is known for the prison where, since 2002, people suspected of terrorist activities have been held. A lesser-known migrant detention center has been operating at this base since the 1990s. It usually accommodated migrants trying to reach the US by sea.
Those who will be relocated include citizens of Great Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Poland, Turkey and Ukraine, as well as from other parts of the world, including Haiti.
At the same time, the Trump administration is unlikely to inform the governments of countries about the transfer of their citizens to the military base. Before being sent, 9,000 people are scheduled to undergo health checks to see if they can be moved to Guantanamo Bay.
“It is far from clear whether these facilities can accommodate 9,000 new detainees, which would represent a significant increase in the number of migrants compared to the several hundred migrants moved in and out of the base earlier this year.” – says the message.
According to representatives of the Trump administration, sending migrants to Guantanamo Bay is due to the overcrowding of detention centers in the United States. The government wants migrants to stay at the base as little as possible, but the White House can decide to hold people longer.
The people who are planned to be transported are allegedly in the United States without legal grounds. While many countries have said they are ready to take their citizens back, officials said they “didn’t act fast enough in the eyes of the Department of Homeland Security.”
