Two out of three Ukrainians are engaged in charity work: the country is in the top 10 of the world ranking

In 2024, Ukraine took seventh place in the world rating of charity, folded by the British organization Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). This is a significant achievement, especially considering that last year Ukrainians occupied the second position in this prestigious list. Despite a five-place drop, Ukraine continues to remain in the top ten countries demonstrating a high level of charity.

It is worth noting that Ukraine is among the five countries that have demonstrated the greatest growth in charity over the last decade. According to CAF, 77% of Ukrainian adults help strangers, 67% regularly make financial donations, and 27% participate in volunteer initiatives.

According to the CAF report, in 2024 a record 4.3 billion people around the world, representing 73% of the world’s adult population, were reached through philanthropy. For the eighth year in a row, Indonesia remains the most generous country, with 90% of citizens making financial donations and 65% participating in volunteer programs.

It is interesting that only the two largest economies in the world – Indonesia and the USA – made it into the top ten of the rating, while the fourth place was taken by one of the poorest countries – The Gambia. The ranking continues to reflect the diversification of charitable activity, where the level of generosity does not always depend on the level of welfare of the country.

The most generous countries in the world in 2024:

  1. Indonesia
  2. Kenya
  3. Singapore
  4. The Gambia
  5. Nigeria
  6. United States
  7. Ukraine
  8. Australia
  9. UAE
  10. Malta

The world rating of philanthropy has been compiled since 2010 based on data from the Gallup World View global survey. It is formed according to three key criteria: financial donations, volunteering and helping strangers. In 2024, more than 145,000 respondents from 142 countries took part in the study.

The dynamics of charity in Ukraine remains at a high level. In 2023 alone, the largest Ukrainian charitable foundations spent more than 1.5% of the country’s GDP on their programs — an amount comparable to spending in such industries as construction or the export of ferrous metals.
