Typhoon in Vietnam killed more than 50 people
At least 51 people have died in Vietnam as a result of typhoon Bualoi and the floods it caused in the north and center of the country, with another 14 missing. This was reported by the Reuters agency.
According to official data, at least 164 people were injured. The storm hit the northern and central coast on September 29, bringing powerful waves, gusty winds and heavy rain. More than 230,000 residential buildings were damaged or flooded, almost 89,000 hectares of rice fields and other crops were destroyed. Roads, schools and administrative buildings were seriously damaged, and tens of thousands of families were left without electricity.
The government estimated economic losses from the typhoon and flooding to be at least 15.9 trillion dong (about US$603 million). In response, the Central Bank of Vietnam instructed financial institutions to consider restructuring or freezing loans for companies that suffered the most losses from the effects of Bualoy.
According to data from the General Statistics Office, between January and August of this year, storms caused Vietnam 371 million dollars in damages, which is three times more than during the same period last year. Last September, Typhoon Yagi killed hundreds of people and caused economic losses estimated at $3.3 billion.
