Ukraine is moving to digital planning for humanitarian demining of deoccupied territories
From 2026, Ukraine will begin the digital transformation of humanitarian demining of deoccupied territories, moving to high-tech methods of planning and resource allocation. The corresponding approach was presented during the final meeting of the National Mine Action Authority.
The event presented a specialized digital platform created by Ukrainian experts and scientists in the fields of ecology, economics, geographic information systems and “Data engineering”. It allows analyzing large data sets and identifying priority areas for demining, primarily agricultural lands, where clearance is most urgent.
The meeting also summed up the results of 2025. During this period, units of the Security and Defense Forces surveyed more than 490 square kilometers of agricultural land in nine regions of Ukraine. Of these, 367 square kilometers were completely cleared of mines and explosive remnants of war, which made it possible to return these lands to economic use.
The participants of the meeting approved the Humanitarian Demining Plan for 2026, developed taking into account the proposals of all mine action entities and current security risks associated with the ongoing Russian aggression. In addition, the personnel of the National Authority was updated and the work strategy for the current year was agreed.
In parallel, optimization of demining costs is underway. Recently, the Humanitarian Demining Center completed bidding for the clearance of three facilities, which will be financed by the Step by Step collection on the UNITED24 platform. According to the results of the auctions, the cost of the work decreased from 61.4 to 53.3 million hryvnias, which allowed saving more than 8 million hryvnias without losing the quality of the work.
