Ukraine is planning to introduce a system of penalty points for drivers

Ukraine is preparing to introduce a system of penalty points for drivers, which has long been used in the countries of the European Union. This was reported by the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Volodymyr Kreidenko on the air of the telethon.

According to him, the system of penalty points will provide for their accumulation in case of regular violations of traffic rules – speeding, improper parking or creating emergency situations. Accumulation of such points will have a direct impact on the right to drive a car and may ultimately result in the driver’s license being revoked.

Kreidenko emphasized that there is a significant number of drivers in Ukraine who systematically violate the rules, receive numerous fines, but continue to pose a threat not only to their own lives, but also to the lives of other road users. He emphasized that the current legislation does not contain additional levers of responsibility for such persons, and that is why the innovation is designed to increase the level of road safety and discipline violators.

The official also drew attention to the problem of speeding fines. Currently, such a fine is 340 hryvnias, and if it is paid within 10 days, it is only 170 hryvnias. According to Kreidenko, this is ineffective because it allows drivers to repeat the same violations with impunity. He also noted that currently the permissible error of speeding is +20 km/h, but it is planned to reduce it to +10 km/h.

Kreidenko emphasized that speeding is one of the main causes of tragedies on the roads, and emphasized that a large number of people die because of it every day. According to him, 41% of all injuries and deaths in traffic accidents are directly related to speeding.
