Ukraine starts exporting biomethane to Europe for the first time

Energy Customs completed the customs declaration for the export of the first batch of biomethane to Europe via pipeline transport. About this reported press service of the department.

“Historical event for the Ukrainian energy industry. “Energy Customs has successfully executed a periodic customs declaration for the movement of the first batch of biomethane for export to Europe by pipeline across the customs border of Ukraine.” – says the message.

Preparation for the export of biomethane lasted two years with the participation of people’s deputies, representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the State Customs Service, the Energy Customs, operators of the gas transportation system and gas storages of Ukraine, the expert environment, civil society and biomethane producers.

The main attention was paid to the introduction of changes to the legislation, in particular, the lifting of the ban on the export of biomethane, since the restriction concerned natural gas. The first batch of biomethane is sent for export by the agricultural holding “Vitagro”, whose plant in the Khmelnytsky region has a capacity of 3 million cubic meters of biomethane per year.

In addition, the Hals Agro company already supplies biomethane to the gas transportation network. From the beginning of 2025, they will be joined by the Oril-Leader MHP division in the Dnipropetrovsk region, capable of producing 11 million cubic meters of biomethane per year.
