Ukraine to propose 30-day ceasefire at talks in Istanbul: Reuters

During the negotiations scheduled for June 2 in Istanbul, the Ukrainian side will present to the Russian delegation its plan for achieving a sustainable peace settlement, which, in particular, provides for a complete ceasefire for 30 days. About this informs Reuters.

According to a copy of the road map obtained by the agency, Ukraine will offer a complete ceasefire for at least 30 days. The next steps should be the exchange of all prisoners in the “all for all” format, as well as the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia or the occupied territories. After the implementation of these stages, the plan envisages a personal meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyi and Vladimir Putin.

Kyiv and Moscow, with the participation of the United States and European countries, will work to agree on conditions that will allow to achieve a final end to the war. The main provisions of the proposed framework agreement largely coincide with the position of Ukraine, voiced earlier. Among the key conditions are the absence of restrictions on Ukraine’s defense capabilities after the conclusion of peace, non-recognition by the international community of the sovereignty of the Russian Federation over the occupied territories, and the need for reparations in favor of Ukraine.

The document states that the current front line should be the starting point for negotiations on territories. At the same time, the proposed conditions are significantly different from the positions voiced by the Russian side in recent weeks.

It will be recalled that on May 16, the first direct meeting between Ukraine and Russia in three years took place in Istanbul. Based on its results, the parties agreed to exchange prisoners in the “1000 for 1000” format, which has already been implemented, as well as to prepare their proposals for a possible ceasefire for the next round of negotiations.
