Ukraine was invited to negotiations regarding the “wall of drones” on the eastern border of the EU
Next week, a meeting of defense ministers of the European Union countries is to be held, at which it is planned to consider the issue of creating a “wall of drones” along the eastern border of the EU. Representatives of Ukraine were also invited to the talks, reports Reuters.
The meeting was announced by the European Commissioner for Defense Andryus Kubilius. He told the agency that the idea of building a defense line against drones was discussed by some countries as recently as last week, and the EU executive body is now striving to translate this idea into a practical plane as soon as possible.
The war has demonstrated weaknesses in Europe and NATO’s ability to counter drones, analysts and officials say, although Polish and other alliance forces have already shot down several of the drones.
“We really want to move forward with very intensive and effective preparations to start filling this gap, which is very dangerous for us, as soon as possible”, Kubilius emphasized.
He clarified that he plans to hold a video conference with the defense ministers of Eastern European countries and a Ukrainian representative who can share the experience of the war after the invasion of Russia in 2022.
“I returned from Kyiv two days ago, and we spoke with both the government and industry representatives. They are interested in sharing their experience and know-how, said the European Commissioner.
Kubilyus emphasized that the negotiations are only in the initial phase, but he envisions the future project as a system that will combine sensors, various types of weapons and means of electronic warfare to detect and destroy enemy drones. At the same time, he admitted that it is too early to talk about the cost of such a project or the timing of its implementation, although some public estimates by analysts foresee the possibility of implementing the idea within a year.
