For the first time in the history of the country’s medicine, Ukrainian doctors successfully performed a unique operation — repeated heart transplantation. Thanks to the coordinated work of specialists of the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health, the 30-year-old patient received a second donor heart, which became a new stage in the development of transplant medicine in Ukraine. Retransplantation became possible thanks to the high professionalism of the team of doctors. According to the institution, the patient, 30-year-old Petro, received the first donor heart seven years ago during an operation in Minsk. However, over time, the transplanted organ began to fail, and the man’s life was in danger. Thanks to the repeated operation, Petro now received a “third heart” and shared his impressions: he noted that he feels great and is infinitely grateful to the team of doctors.
Heart retransplantation is one of the most complex procedures in transplant medicine, as it requires highly accurate diagnosis, careful preparation of the patient, and coordinated actions of the entire medical team. The operation not only saved the patient’s life, but also became an important breakthrough for Ukrainian medicine, demonstrating its ability to reach the world level.
The Heart Institute already has considerable experience in performing complex operations. Previously, his specialists successfully performed two stages of heart implantation for the first time in Ukraine. First, the patient was fitted with a mechanical heart that supported his life, and a year and a half later, a donor organ was transplanted.
