Ukrainian girls among the best in Europe: schoolgirls won gold, silver and bronze at the Olympiad in Informatics
Despite the war, constant changes in the educational process, air raids and forced relocations, Ukrainian children continue to study successfully, work with the most complex disciplines and achieve results at the international level. The Olympiads in exact sciences are especially indicative, where accidental success is almost impossible, because behind each medal are years of systematic preparation, logic training, a strong school of mentors and the ability to think quickly during tough competition.
Ukrainian schoolgirl becomes absolute winner of EGOI
As reported by the Ukrainian Federation of Olympiads in Informatics, Daria Perekopska from Dnipro won a gold medal at the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics and became the absolute winner of the competition. She beat 247 participants from 67 countries, which makes her result one of the most notable achievements of Ukrainian schoolchildren in international informatics.
Daria is in the 11th grade of the Dnipro Scientific Lyceum of Information Technologies. She was prepared for the Olympiad by coach Valentyn Melnyk. This victory is of particular importance for Ukraine, as the representative of our country became the absolute winner of the European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics for the first time.
The European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics was held from May 12 to 18 in the Italian city of Cesenatico. The participants solved complex algorithmic problems, where the assessment was not on knowledge of ready-made formulas, but on the ability to build effective solutions, work with data, look for patterns and write accurate code within a limited time.
Such competitions require schoolgirls not only technical training, but also endurance, because one error in logic or implementation can significantly affect the final result. An absolute victory means that the Ukrainian participant showed the strongest result among all the contestants.
Ukrainian team results
The Ukrainian team finished the Olympiad with four medals: one gold, two silver and one bronze. In the European team standings, Ukraine entered the top four, which confirmed the high level of preparation not of one participant, but of the entire team.
Silver medals were won by Maria Rapina, a 10th grade student of Kharkiv Academic Lyceum No. 45, and Anastasia Yaremko, an 11th grade student of Lviv Physics and Mathematics Lyceum. The bronze medal was won by Tetyana Zadniprovska, a 10th grade student of Lyceum No. 1 named after Volodymyr Krasytskyi of the Khmelnytskyi City Council.
The Ukrainian team included schoolgirls from different cities, which shows the wide geography of strong Olympiad preparation. Daria Perekopska represented Dnipro, Maria Rapina – Kharkiv, Anastasia Yaremko – Lviv, Tetyana Zadniprovska – Khmelnytskyi.
The participants were prepared by Valentyn Melnyk, Mykola Arzubov and Andriy Popyk. Their work is no less important than the performance itself, because international computer science requires not one-time classes, but a long system of training, selections, analysis of tasks and constant complication of the level.
The girls’ result shows that the Ukrainian school of computer science remains competitive even in difficult conditions. Olympiads of this level are not about quick memorization of material, but about a deep understanding of algorithms, mathematical thinking culture and the ability to create solutions where there is no ready-made template.
The success of Ukrainian schoolgirls is also important for girls in technical areas. EGOI was created so that more schoolgirls would enter computer science, programming and computer science, where there is still an imbalance between boys and girls. The Ukrainian team showed with its result that this barrier can be overcome through strong preparation, mentoring and access to complex intellectual competitions.
Thus, the victory of Daria Perekopska and the medals of Maria Rapina, Anastasia Yaremko and Tetyana Zadniprovska became one of the strongest results of Ukraine at the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics. Gold, two silver medals, bronze and fourth place in the team competition showed that Ukrainian schoolgirls are able to compete with the best participants in the world and win at a level where accuracy, preparation and intellectual endurance are crucial.
