Ukrainian icebreaker “Noosphere” for the first time conducts research commissioned by the United States

The Ukrainian icebreaker “Noosphere” is performing tasks in the Southern Ocean for the first time on the order of the US National Science Foundation. About this reported Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

“For several days now, our icebreaker has been working in the waters around the American Antarctic station Palmer. From aboard the Noosphere, researchers from the United States are carrying out their marine research program.” – the message says.

This is the first such mission not only for “Noosphere”, but also for the entire Ukrainian fleet. In honor of cooperation, the flags of both countries were raised on board the icebreaker and the station.

“During the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine, cooperation with other states in the Antarctic is becoming more and more urgent for us. This is not only our contribution to the development of world science and the attraction of additional funds from foreign partners, but also “Antarctic diplomacy”, since the icy continent is an important arena world geopolitics”, – said Yevhen Dykiy, director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center.

At the end of the week, “Noosphere” will complete its mission at the “Palmer” station and, together with American researchers, will go to the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadskyi”, where negotiations will take place on expanding cooperation.
