Ukrainian judges will be able to use artificial intelligence during work

In Ukraine, judges will officially be allowed to use artificial intelligence during the preparation of court decisions. This innovation is included in the updated edition of the Code of Judicial Ethics, in particular, in Article 16. About it informs edition “Sudovo-yuridychna gazeta”.

However, the use of artificial intelligence will be limited and will not apply to the decision-making process or the evaluation of evidence.

On September 9, during the presentation of the project of the updated Code of Judicial Ethics, a new provision was presented that defines the conditions for the use of artificial intelligence by judges. It emphasizes that the use of such technologies is permissible only on the condition that it does not affect the independence or impartiality of the judge, does not affect the evaluation of evidence or the decision-making process, and does not violate the applicable law.

According to the new rules, Ukrainian judges will be able to use artificial intelligence to perform the following tasks:

  • preparation of texts of court decisions;
  • search for relevant court practice;
  • analysis of information necessary for the case.

When the innovation will come into force

On September 12, the Council of Judges of Ukraine will consider proposed changes to the Code of Judicial Ethics. If approved, judges will be able to officially use artificial intelligence in their work, which will be an important step in the modernization of the judicial system.
