Ukrainian nuclear power plants were able to resume work after the latest Russian attacks

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on the significant resumption of operation of three Ukrainian nuclear power plants after a sharp reduction in electricity production, which was implemented last week as a precautionary measure due to attacks on energy infrastructure.

Of the nine reactors of the Khmelnytsky, Rivne and South Ukrainian NPPs, eight are currently operating, and one remains shut down. Over the past week, most reactors have been gradually ramping up capacity following Russia’s massive strikes on energy infrastructure on November 28. At the same time, some external power lines have not yet been restored.

“A stable power grid that provides secure off-site power is essential to ensuring nuclear safety at Ukraine’s operating nuclear power plants, which are vital to the generation of electricity the country needs, especially during the cold winter months. Operators have demonstrated considerable resilience during and after this latest period of grid instability so that these plants can maintain nuclear safety and generate electricity after last week’s production cuts”, – said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

At the same time, he emphasized that the situation with energy networks remains “fragile” and causes serious concern. The IAEA will continue to monitor the situation, including conducting additional inspections at the substations on which the NPPs depend. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint to avoid actions that could disrupt external power supplies and nuclear safety.
