Oleksandr Merezhko, deputy from the Servant of the People party and chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, unexpectedly proposed Donald Trump’s candidacy for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. He officially appealed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee with the rationale why the newly elected US president deserves this prestigious award. The deadline for submitting nominations is January 31, 2025.
In his leaves, published by the Kyiv Independent, Merezhko emphasized that Trump has the potential to contribute to the end of the war in Ukraine on the basis of international law and the UN Charter. The deputy also emphasized that Trump made a significant contribution to strengthening global stability, in particular through diplomatic successes in the Middle East. These are the so-called “Abraham Accords”, which led to the normalization of relations between Israel and a number of Muslim countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan.
Merezhko also drew attention to military aid to Ukraine, which Trump approved even before the start of a full-scale Russian invasion. According to him, such decisions helped to form an international coalition of support for Ukraine, which now plays a key role in resisting Russian aggression.
“Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in the international arena, which contributed to the achievement of peace and stability. His initiatives laid the foundation for strong international cooperation in the world.” – Merezhko wrote.
We will remind you that this is not Trump’s first nomination for the Nobel Prize. In early 2024, U.S. Congresswoman Claudia Tenney also nominated him, citing his achievements in brokering peace deals in the Middle East. Donald Trump himself has repeatedly expressed indignation that his efforts on the international stage remained underappreciated.
However, despite numerous nominations, Trump has never received this award. Recently, even Oleksandr Lukashenko said that Trump could claim the Nobel Prize if he helps end the war in Ukraine.
The Merezhka initiative aroused lively interest among political experts and the public. Time will tell whether this nomination will be a new page in Trump’s history, because the final decision of the Nobel Committee will be announced in October 2025.
