Ukrainians trust telethon the least, and Telegram channels the most: survey
Telegram channels remain the main source of information for Ukrainians, and at the same time they are trusted the most. The lowest level of trust is observed in the telethon. This testifies to the survey results of the sociological group “Rating”.
More than half of the respondents (52%) read Telegram channels constantly or often (4-5 days a week). The second most popular is YouTube (32%), the third is Facebook (28%). 25% of respondents regularly view the “Edyny Novy” telethon and Viber chats. The use of print media is rare: 84% never turn to newspapers and magazines for information.
The majority of Ukrainians also never receive news from radio (75%), regional media (69%), regional online resources (67%) and international online media (66%).
Despite the general mistrust of the media, Telegram channels (29%) and YouTube channels (24%) have the highest level of trust. International and Ukrainian online media are trusted or rather trusted by 16% of respondents.
The telethon received the least amount of trust: 39% expressed distrust or rather mistrust, 24% hesitated, and 19% could not answer.
Almost 40% of respondents never check the veracity of the received information, while 18% always do it. Young people aged 18–29 years, people with higher education, as well as military personnel and veterans are most often fact-checkers. The most common methods of verification are using one’s own experience and intuition (34%) and checking with several authoritative sources (25%).
The survey was commissioned by the Lviv Media Forum and International Media Support by the method of personal interviews among residents of Ukraine aged 18 and over. A total of 2,000 respondents were interviewed, the margin of error does not exceed 2.2%.
