“Ukrenergo” built the first line of passive protection of critical equipment

NEC “Ukrenergo” completed the construction of the first phase of passive protection structures for the equipment of its substations and plans to complete the second phase in the first quarter of 2026. This was announced during a briefing at the Media Center of Ukraine in Kyiv, a member of the company’s supervisory board Yuriy Boyko.

“There are queues for the construction of protective structures, because it requires de-energizing the equipment. Accordingly, it is impossible to simultaneously carry out work on the entire territory of the substation or on all objects, because they must provide power supply. We have already completed the first turn. Now the construction of the second stage is actively underway. According to the plan, more than 80% of Phase 2 should be completed by the end of the year. And the full completion will fall on the 1st quarter of 2026, Boyko explained.

He noted that in the regions, especially near the front, due to constant anxiety and military threats, “work is accompanied by longer pauses, and its speed cannot be the same for everyone”.

According to him, the area of substations is from 20 to 70 hectares, and it is impossible to cover it with a sarcophagus, so all resources are directed to the most important elements, including auto transformers, which, according to him, the Russians actively knocked out in the first year of the war. He added that in order to preserve the equipment of substations, a plan was developed for the construction of protective structures for key facilities.

We would like to remind you that on September 3, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky instructed the Secretary of the NSDC, Rustem Umerov, to organize the work of government structures, regional administrations and energy companies for the purchase of additional short- and medium-range air defense systems, as well as to strengthen funding for drone manufacturers. The main priority is to intercept “shaheeds”.
