Children of war

UNICEF provides emergency assistance to children across Ukraine where the security situation allows

The war, which has been going on for the third year, has brought untold suffering to millions of Ukrainian children. Destruction, fear, separation from loved ones and uncertainty have become commonplace for them. In these conditions, international aid plays a critically important role. Particularly significant are the efforts of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), which provides comprehensive support to children and their families, helping them survive the war and adapt to new realities.

Ukraine became a field of destruction, where rockets and shelling destroyed residential buildings, schools, hospitals and playgrounds. Many children were forced to leave their homes, say goodbye to friends, and sometimes lose their loved ones. In such an environment, every day is accompanied by air raid sirens, forcing families to seek shelter in underground shelters or the subway. Constant fear, sadness and anxiety become the norm for children’s lives, causing serious damage to their mental health. According to experts’ estimates, about 1.5 million Ukrainian children are at risk of depression, anxiety disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder.

In these difficult conditions, UNICEF provides emergency assistance where the security situation allows. Families receive medicine, medical supplies, hygiene items, educational materials and warm clothes. This assistance is especially important during the winter months when many families live in damaged homes without running water, electricity or heating. Generators, warm clothes and blankets, as well as cash assistance for the purchase of food are just some of the activities organized by UNICEF.

Support of hospitals and educational institutions

Even in the most difficult conditions, UNICEF helps ensure access to medical care. In Lviv, for example, thanks to the organization’s support, a maternity ward was set up in the basement of the hospital. This allows you to give birth even during missile attacks. Medical equipment, power generators and other resources enable hospitals to function even in critical conditions.

UNICEF also helps children continue their education by creating safe conditions in subways, shelters or mobile classrooms. The organization provides schools with warmth, learning materials and toys so that children can learn and play even in the most difficult conditions.

Psychological help through innovative methods

UNICEF pays special attention to the psychological health of children. Therapy sessions with dogs are held in Kharkiv, which help children overcome fears and emotional stress. In centers such as Spilno, created by UNICEF, children can receive support in a friendly atmosphere. They play, learn and feel safe, which is very important for their adaptation.

Ensuring access to clean water

One of the biggest problems for many families in wartime is the lack of clean water. UNICEF is working to restore the water supply by providing pumps, pipes and chemicals to clean the water. Thanks to these efforts, thousands of families have access to safe drinking water, which allows them to maintain their health even in difficult conditions.

Safety training courses

UNICEF organizes safety courses where children are taught to avoid dangers such as mines and fires. In mobile classrooms, children also learn about other risks, including online threats. Such measures help children navigate difficult circumstances and take care of their safety.

Volunteer programs and social initiatives

The Upshift program, created by UNICEF, encourages young people to create social initiatives in their communities. Volunteers organize creative workshops, conduct classes for children and help them develop self-realization skills. These projects contribute to the formation of resilience in the younger generation and give them a sense of confidence in their abilities.

Aid to Ukrainian children abroad

UNICEF also supports Ukrainian refugee children in neighboring countries. In cooperation with local authorities and the governments of Poland, Moldova, and Romania, the organization provides access to education, medical services, and psychological assistance. Children can return to their studies, make new friends and adapt to life in new conditions.

Despite all the challenges, the children of Ukraine continue to dream of a better future. UNICEF helps them not only to survive, but also to build a new life even in the most difficult circumstances. Thanks to international support, these efforts give families hope and confidence that even in the darkest times, change for the better is possible.
