US and Britain lift sanctions on Syrian president and interior minister

The United States and the United Kingdom have lifted sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his meeting with US President Donald Trump. In addition, Washington and London have lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab. This is reported in a statement from the US Treasury Department.

Previously, both officials were subject to sanctions imposed as part of the fight against ISIS (Islamic State) and one of the largest international terrorist organizations, “Al-Qaeda”. The US has also added them to the list of particularly dangerous international terrorists.

According to a representative of the European Union, Europe plans to follow suit:

“We remain committed to supporting a peaceful and inclusive transition led and owned by Syrians to help build a better future for all Syrians”.

The Syrian president’s visit to the White House is scheduled for November 10. This will be the first official visit by a Syrian leader to the United States.

As a reminder, on November 6, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to lift sanctions on the new Syrian president before his meeting with Trump. Russia voted “in favor”, while China abstained.
