Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree terminating the Ukrainian citizenship of Odessa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree terminating the citizenship of Odesa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov. This was reported in the SBU press service.
“The Commission under the President of Ukraine on citizenship issues decided to terminate the citizenship of our state to the mayor of Odesa, Gennady Trukhanov. Such a decision, in particular, is based on the evidence base of the Security Service and approved by the Decree of the President of Ukraine,” the message reads.
The SBU reports that Gennadiy Trukhanov is currently a citizen of the Russian Federation and has a valid foreign passport of the aggressor country, copies of which are at the disposal of the Ukrainian special services.
“Yes, according to available data, on December 15, 2015, already after the beginning of the aggression against Ukraine and the temporary occupation of Crimea, as well as parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Gennadiy Leonidovych Trukhanov received a foreign passport of the occupying country. It was issued for a period of 10 years and is currently a valid document,” the department noted.
According to the SBU, in 2017 Trukhanov’s representatives submitted a statement to the Russian authorities, after which a court in the Moscow region revoked the validity of his internal passport of the Russian Federation. At the same time, additional explanations emphasized that the cancellation or rejection of an internal passport “does not entail deprivation of Russian citizenship acquired by a person on a legal basis.” Thus, according to the SBU, Gennadiy Trukhanov will continue to be a citizen of the Russian Federation.
Recall that on October 14, following the results of a meeting on the security situation, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that he had signed a decree regarding “certain persons” whose Russian citizenship was confirmed. At the same time, he did not announce the names of these persons.
Trukhanov himself denies that he has Russian citizenship and announced his intention to appeal the decision to revoke his Ukrainian citizenship:
“I will appeal the decision to deprive me of Ukrainian citizenship in the Supreme Court. And if this is not enough, then at the European Court of Human Rights”.
