Zelensky and Macron agreed to test the SAMP/T air defense system to intercept ballistic missiles

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced an agreement with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to obtain a new SAMP/T air defense system capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

According to Zelensky said that during the meeting with Macron, an alternative to the American Patriot air defense system was discussed.

“SAMP/T is the only alternative in Europe today. We will see this year whether the new systems will be shot down SAMP/T ballistics. This year we will receive a system that we will test against ballistics. Therefore, if it works, it will be a good help in the long run,” he stressed.

The President added that in case of successful tests, Ukraine will be first in line to receive new systems.

“If we and the French succeed and we can shoot down ballistics, then this is the first such alternative. And, of course, Emmanuel and I agree that Ukraine will be first in line. Because as soon as they start shooting down ballistics, there will be a queue right away. Therefore, my main task was to agree that we would test together with them and be first in line. I don’t see any other alternatives yet,” Zelensky said.

The president also mentioned Ukraine’s intention to obtain a license from the United States to produce ballistic missile interceptors. In addition, with the assistance of the German Defense Minister, Ukraine expects to receive more than 30 interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system in the coming weeks.
