Zelenskyy told what he will talk about with Trump: key issues of the negotiations
Ahead of the scheduled meeting with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the central topics of the upcoming negotiations will be security guarantees for Ukraine and the timeframe for their implementation in the context of a possible peace agreement. In addition, the parties plan to discuss the financial support needed for the country’s post-war reconstruction.
The head of state told media representatives about this during a short stay in Canada on the way to the United States.
Zelensky noted that after a personal meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, they held an online conversation with European leaders. During this discussion, the “key documents” that the Ukrainian president intends to present during negotiations with Trump were discussed.
At the same time, the president noted that European partners currently do not have complete information about the peace process, since Kyiv and Washington have been working in a “bilateral format” for some time.
“We really hope that there will be a constructive conversation in the United States, we really want to meet with European leaders to share all the developments that we have and discuss them. Because there are US security guarantees, as well as security guarantees that depend on our European colleagues, Zelensky said, adding that he had already proposed a further schedule of meetings to European leaders.
According to the president, after negotiations with the head of the White House, during which it is planned to discuss “various sensitive points,” he will inform European politicians about the agreements reached and other important details.
“I think that the conversation with Trump should be normal, and maybe we will connect with European leaders again to discuss all these issues,” – the head of state noted.
27 December Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Canada, where he met with Prime Minister Mark Carney. During the meeting, the Canadian government announced the provision of financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 2.5 billion Canadian dollars.
On December 26, the President of Ukraine confirmed that his meeting with Donald Trump will take place on December 28. According to Axios, the talks may take place at the Mar-a-Lago residence. The parties are expected to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, as well as possible steps to increase pressure on the Kremlin if Russia rejects a constructive scenario for ending the war.
Commenting on the initiatives of the Ukrainian president, Donald Trump said in an interview with Politico:
“He won’t have anything until I approve it. So let’s see what he has”.
