A Russian submarine surfaced off the coast of France

Russian diesel-electric submarine B-261 “Novorossiysk” surfaced near the coast of Brittany in northwestern France. To control the situation, the French side sent a Navy frigate. This was reported by NATO Maritime Command.

“A French Navy frigate is monitoring the Alliance’s naval approaches, recording the presence of a Russian submarine operating on the surface off the coast of Brittany. “NATO is ready to defend our Alliance by maintaining constant vigilance and maritime awareness throughout the Atlantic Ocean,” the statement said.

According to available information, the submarine was forced to surface due to a serious accident in the fuel system. Fuel began to enter directly into the hold, which created an explosive situation. The crew did not have the necessary spare parts and specialists to eliminate the malfunction, so they could not cope on their own.

B-261 “Novorossiysk” belongs to the 4th separate brigade of submarines of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. Its construction began in 2010 in St. Petersburg, it was launched in 2013, and in 2014 it entered the Russian Navy.
