A Ukrainian Magura V5 sea drone was found near one of the islands in Greece
An unmanned surface vehicle, identified as a Ukrainian Magura V5 naval drone, was found in Greek territorial waters near the island of Lefkada discovered. The marine off-road vehicle was first spotted by local fishermen in a coastal cave near Cape Ducato.
At the time of discovery, the vehicle’s engine remained operational, which, along with the presence of numerous antennas and communication systems, caused concern among witnesses. The fishermen towed the vessel to the port of Vasiliki, where it was handed over to the coast guard.
According to the results of a preliminary inspection conducted by specialists from the Mine Clearance Battalion, detonators were found in the drone, but there was no explosive inside. This allowed to dispel initial fears about the threat of an explosion in the port.
Currently, Greek law enforcement agencies are considering several scenarios for the purpose of this drone. In particular, investigators do not rule out that the boat could have been involved in operations against vessels of the so-called shadow fleet of the Russian Federation, which transport oil in circumvention of international sanctions.
“Initial results indicate that the drone contained detonators, but not explosives, which dispelled the initial fears that led to the deployment of explosive ordnance disposal specialists,” the investigation materials say.
Another version of the investigation concerns the possible use of high-tech equipment by criminal groups for drug smuggling. Similar incidents involving the detection of naval drones near foreign shores have occurred before, in particular on the coast of Turkey and the Black Sea. The incident in Greece coincided with a difficult stage of interstate negotiations between Kyiv and Athens.
Currently, the dialogue on a cooperation agreement in the field of naval drone production has encountered certain disagreements. The main disputes arise around the terms of licensing and the right to control the use of finished products. Despite the technical readiness to launch joint production at Greek shipyards, diplomatic and security nuances remain the subject of additional consultations.
The official investigation into the circumstances of the appearance of the Magura V5 in the Ionian Sea is ongoing under the supervision of national security services. Analysis of the drone’s navigation systems should help establish its route and ultimate destination in Greek waters. Conflicts of interest and technical incidents highlight the complexity of integrating new military technologies into the international legal and security framework.
