Israel eliminates last top Hamas commander
Israel has launched an airstrike on Gaza City, saying it targeted Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip and head of the group’s military wing. The Times of Israel reports.
The strike hit a residential building in the Rimal neighborhood. At least three people were killed and about 20 wounded. It was not immediately clear whether al-Haddad was among the injured.
The Israeli military said it had targeted the commander’s hideout and a car trying to leave the area. Three aircraft took part in the operation, dropping 13 bombs.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that they had personally authorized the operation. Al-Haddad was accused of murder, kidnapping, attacks on Israeli soldiers and civilians, and refusing to support a Hamas disarmament plan.
Al-Haddad became the group’s de facto military leader after the assassination of Muhammad Sinwar in 2025 and is considered the most senior Hamas leader to be targeted since the ceasefire.
